In Their Own Words

“It’s not interesting, it’s just about being so, so sad; so sad that you see sadness in all the lovely things. I’m not telling you anything new! It’s the hungry-for-torture imagination of the lovelorn, saying, “give me some images of our separateness,” then “you aren’t even happy,” then “okay, okay; I’ll shut up.” This song (like a lot of mine) is about the first big one, the one that teaches you your capacity. There’s a hilarious side of it, crying in your nice bathtub in your nice house with snot running down your lips, and I know that side, but sometimes you want to take seriously the glory of getting pulverized.

A while ago my partner and I discovered this big metal geodesic dome over the picnic area at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham. It must be a fearsome sound when there’s a dome full of picnicking kids because this place echoes like Superman’s ice cave. He had the idea of playing my vocal out of a bluetooth speaker really loud in there and recording the echo to use as reverb on this track, and that is just what you hear. We ended up using that on probably half the songs on the record.” - Libby Rodenbough

Lyrics

Mary is young

Watching it bloom with her eyes wide

I've seen it too

I know the trains are on time

So goodnight Hollywood

Goodnight Paris

Goodnight to the banks of the Zuiderzee

But tell me how the sun breaks on you

In the morning

So I'd have no need

To stay up thinkin bout

Where you been sleeping

Without me

Nobody's full

Another round for these young and gray

You and your friend

You don't care for the strong taste

So goodnight New York

Goodnight Paris

Goodnight to the banks of the Zuiderzee

I'm gonna be quiet someday
