It’s Psychical release day! We’re very stoked about this record, about SunSp.t as an artist, and about Joe as the lovely human he is.
Joe has appeared on nearly every Sleepy Cat release as the keyboard/synth guru. A few of his broader credits as a keys phenom include The Mountain Goats, Abigail Dowd, Chatham Rabbits, Dreamroot, and The Oblations (his dizzying long-time collaboration with guitarist and luthier Daniel Fields in which he plays keys & drums simultaneously.
With SunSp.t, Joe thrives in the multi-brained role of songwriter, all-instrumentalist, producer, mixer, and philosopher. His world is exploratory, dense, and immersive - Psychical being no exception. In certain moments, the record brims with aggressive synthesizers and pummeling drums, while coasting through ambient soundscapes at others, guided either by Joe’s vocoder or his natural tenor. Lyrically, the album is a rich, Socratic journey through songs about living life to the fullest in a technological world sliding into disarray, accepting impermanence, questioning power dynamics, growing from life’s hurdles and moving with intention. It is anti-war and anti-imperialism.
