Earleine Does Dirty Work

Steely Dan…a contentious band. Highly regarded, but also highly annoying? Some worship their arrangements and legendary attention to detail. Others firmly believe their music is overrated and unecessary.

For the first Sleepy Cat treat of 2021, Ashley Wright brushes aside Steely Dan’s weird and divisive mythology to bring us a modern and sharp interpretation of their hit, “Dirty Work,” co-produced by Saman Khoujinian and Alex Bingham.

Where there were thick horns, there are now rich synthesizers. Where SD’s drums were light and jazzy, Earleine’s are deep and punchy. Where Donald Fagen’s very soft-70s-frontman tenor floated above the rest of the tune, Ashley remains mellow and brooding - a little truer to the song’s message that infidelity is complicated.
